As a Cadillac dealership, it should come as no surprise that we’re big fans of the Cadillac lineup and everything these remarkable vehicles offer. That being said, even if we step back from our place in the auto industry and look at things objectively, Cadillac’s vehicles still prove themselves to be the best out there. This becomes even clearer if you compare what they make to similar models from other brands, like looking at the 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ vs 2024 VW ID.4. To be honest, it almost seems unfair to make this comparison considering just how much better than the ID.4 the LYRIQ is, but they’re both all-electric SUVs so they do share a similar place in the market. That being said, the gorgeous design and incredible performance of the Cadillac model put it in a league all its own, but let’s take a look at how they stack up so you can see for yourself which model comes out on top.

All-Electric Performance

For many of us, our SUVs are daily drivers that we count on to get us through our commute, running errands, and our busy schedules. They’re not necessarily exciting like a sports car or designed for handling the kind of work a truck can do, making it easy to overlook things like performance with these vehicles because we’re often more focused on getting to where we need to go. The shift to electrified performance changes that. With power systems that are as exhilarating as many sports cars on the road, all-electric SUVs are an exciting and practical segment for all drivers.

Not every car company has mastered electrified engineering and performance to the same degree, so comparing what their vehicles can do is important. Looking at the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, we can see that there are two battery options available, each delivering different amounts of power. The standard 62 kWh battery is only offered with a single motor on the rear axle, delivering 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque, which is decent but far from exciting. A more powerful 82 kWh battery is available for better performance and is offered with either a single motor for 282 hp and 402 lb-ft of torque or a dual-motor setup with 335 hp. This is a much better option, but we’re about to see how much it still falls short.

The Cadillac LYRIQ utilizes GM’s incredible Ultium battery platform and has a 102 kWh battery pack that delivers massive power for you to enjoy on the road. A single-motor option is standard with 340 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque, but you can also choose a dual-motor configuration that boosts performance up to an unbelievable 500 hp and 450 lb-ft of instant torque. You can see that the standard option with the LYRIQ blows away the starting performance of the VW ID.4, and the dual-motor setup surpasses anything the ID.4 can do. This provides you with an exhilarating driving experience that you’ll look forward to every time you get behind the wheel, whether you need to make a quick trip to the store or you’re heading out on a long road trip for your next vacation.

EV Range and Charging Options

One thing that some people worry about with electric vehicles (EVs) is the kind of range they offer from a fully charged battery. In the past, the range from early EVs could be pretty limited, so this concern was understandable, though the range on modern EVs has vastly improved. Looking at the VW ID.4, the standard 62 kWh battery only gets an estimated 206 miles from a full charge, which is underwhelming. Fortunately, the available 82 kWh battery improves things with up to 291 miles of range from a full charge with its single-motor setup, but choosing the dual-motor option for better performance lowers that to just 263 miles of range.

With the Cadillac LYRIQ, on the other hand, you get a remarkable range no matter which configuration you choose due to its innovative Ultium battery system. The single-motor setup has the greatest range at an estimated 314 miles from a full charge, but even the dual-motor configuration, with its unbelievable performance, still gets up to 307 miles of range. This shows Cadillac’s commitment to vehicles that work well no matter what you need. The LYRIQ supports 11.5 kW Level 2 charging that gets you up to 31 miles of range from a one-hour charge and 19.2 kW Level 2 charging for up to 51 miles of range from an hour plugged in. With 190 kW public DC fast charging, you can get about 77 miles of range added in just 10 minutes of charging, making the LYRIQ fun to drive, easy to use, and convenient for a wide range of needs.

Interior Technology and Advanced Features

Cadillac is known for making some of the most sophisticated and luxurious vehicles on the road, so it’s no surprise that they’re leading the way in terms of what we expect from an EV SUV. Looking at the VW ID.4, it certainly comes up short in comparison. For example, inside the ID.4, we find a standard 12-inch Infotainment display, which is pretty good. A larger screen is available, but it’s just 12.9 inches. It offers greater functionality, but the fact that it’s not a standard feature is disappointing. There’s also VW’s new ID.Light system that features a light bar across the dashboard that provides you with information by the way it glows and pulses; it’s a fun concept, but ultimately feels more like a gimmick than a feature.

Checking out the inside of the LYRIQ, we’re immediately struck by the massive 33-inch advanced LED display that stretches across the front. With 9K resolution, this gorgeous screen can display more than one billion colors and provides you with the information you need, along with impressive functionality. Better yet, this 33-inch screen comes standard in every model. To elevate things further, you can choose an available AKG Studio 19-speaker sound system for an incredible audio experience on the road and more features like tri-zone climate control that ensures everyone inside your vehicle is incredibly comfortable.

Advanced Safety Systems and More

Not all of the tech features coming from Cadillac are about flashy things inside your vehicle’s cabin—much of their work goes into keeping you and your loved ones safe. Fortunately, Volkswagen also understands how important this is, so we see some good stuff with the ID.4, too. VW’s IQ.DRIVE system helps protect drivers with features like adaptive cruise control, an Active Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Traffic Alert. Front Assist and Emergency Assist are also included, along with Lane Assist, to help folks stay where they belong while driving.

Once again, however, Cadillac goes further with the Cadillac Smart System, which is standard on every LYRIQ. This includes a Forward Collision Alert, a Safety Alert Seat that sends vibrations through the driver’s seat to warn you about safety alerts, and Automatic Emergency Braking with Front Pedestrian Braking. You also get Rear Park Assist, which makes navigating tight spots and crowded parking lots easier, and much more. Best of all, GM’s incredible available Super Cruise system is available for the LYRIQ, giving you true hands-free driving that includes the ability to change lanes and much more.

Cadillac Races Into the Future

As you can see, the Volkswagen ID.4 is an acceptable vehicle in its own right, but it cannot hope to keep up with everything the Cadillac LYRIQ offers. The LYRIQ has redefined what we expect from an electric SUV with mind-blowing performance, fantastic range and charging functionality, and stunning interior features that immediately dropped our jaws. If you’re looking for an elevated driving experience that you cannot find anywhere else, then you owe it to yourself to check out the LYRIQ and everything it has to offer. At the end of the day, words don’t do it justice—you need to take one for a spin to fully appreciate how it has changed the game when it comes to SUV luxury, performance, and style. Then, you can drive into the electrified future of the auto industry and enjoy everything it has to offer.
